EFT for Couples Therapy
I feel alone, and hurt and I do not know if I matter to you, and that is terrifying. I am feeling vulnerable and I need you to respond to me, but because I am feeling lost I do not know how to reach you. So I yell, demand, complain, and whatever else I need to do to get your attention, but all I see is you pulling away from me. I feel like I am not good enough and I fear that you will reject me. I feel that nothing I do is enough and if I try to talk, it feels like things always get worse. I do not want to cause issues or harm you or the relationship, so I shut down, pull away, or avoid vulnerable emotions. But all I see is you getting upset and I feel alone.
Common Relationship Patterns
Patterns similar to this are very common amongst couples, and create experiences in relationships that are painful, isolating, disconnecting, and frustrating. Each partner wants to feel safe and connected with the person they love, but something appears to block them and creates a pattern where they get stuck. It can feel like the same argument happens over and over again, or no matter what is done, nothing changes. Couples want to get out of these patterns but sometimes do not know how to do so.
What is EFT?
EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy) is a type of therapy that addresses these concerns and helps couples get unstuck from their patterns that create disconnection and pain. Through an attachment lens, clients will learn how to have a secure bond, understand and find balance in their emotions, and reach for their needs to be met. In three stages, clients will learn how to slow down and recognize their pattern for what it is and identify underlying emotions that drive it in the first place. Then clients will learn how to access their needs, share their fears, and gain acceptance and validation from each other. Finally, clients will create a new narrative of their relationship and create new patterns of safety and security.
