Is Group Therapy Right for Me?

two-female-friendsWasatch Family Therapy is starting a new Women’s Group, beginning Thursday, September 5. This group will be a wonderful way for women to interact and feel support. It is normal to have some apprehension about joining a group like this. If you are wondering whether or not a group would be the right thing for you, here are some questions you can ask yourself:Do I feel alone? If you’re feeling lonely for any reason, group can be a great place to feel a sense of purpose and belonging. It gives you the opportunity to interact with others, and fill your life with more people who truly know and care about you. Even if there are weeks you don’t feel like talking, you can at least still feel the presence of others, and keep from feeling isolated and cut off from the world.Do I wonder if I’m going crazy? One of the largest benefits of group therapy is that it allows you to see that you’re not the only one facing hard things. There is something about being in a room filled with people going through similar challenges and experiences that is very comforting. You can use this to not only ease your fears that you aren’t “normal”, but as a learning experience as you watch how others cope and handle difficulty.Do I feel like I have no one to talk to about the hard stuff?Even if you have plenty of meaningful relationships, you may lack someone that you feel you can go to with your scariest thoughts and emotions or deepest concerns. Keeping the most difficult things to yourself only makes things more difficult.Group provides a safe place for you to share whatever it is you need to, and feel support and encouragement in return.Do I want helpful advice? You can’t always solve every problem on your own. Sometimes it is helpful to get constructive feedback and advice from people you trust. Group offers an opportunity for this, and allows you to support and offer up any wisdom you may have to others.Do I need more people in my life? One of our greatest difficulties in our society is staying connected to others on a meaningful level. You may have reached a point in your life where you don’t have many family or friends that you interact with on a consistent basis. Group therapy allows you the opportunity to increase your support system and connect with other wonderful people on a weekly basis. If you were able to answer “yes” to any of these questions, Women’s Group could be a perfect fit for you. Our first meeting is going to be held on September 5 from 5:30-7:00. This will be a “Getting to Know the Group” type of session where group members can interact, ask questions, and learn more about what Women’s Group is all about. It will only be $10, and refreshments will be provided. If after this first meeting you feel group would be beneficial for you, we will continue meeting every Thursday from 5:30-7:00 at $50 per session.
